French tense

French present tense

The first tense every learner meets, and the one you'll use in roughly every other French sentence. Here's how to form it for regular and irregular verbs.

When to use Présent

Now

Use it for what is happening or true now. French normally needs no separate progressive tense.

Je parle avec Marie.
I am speaking with Marie.

Habits and facts

Use it for repeated behavior, stable facts, and abilities.

Nous allons au marché le samedi.
We go to the market on Saturdays.

Planned future

With a future time marker, the present can describe an arranged event.

Je pars demain matin.
I am leaving tomorrow morning.

How to form Présent

Regular verbs use the endings of their group. Spelling-change families preserve pronunciation, while common irregular verbs have their own paradigms.
