French tense

French passé composé

The everyday past tense. Used for completed, bounded events. Compound form: an auxiliary (avoir or être) plus the past participle.

When to use Passé composé

Completed event

Use it for a past action viewed as finished.

J'ai mangé une pomme.
I ate an apple.

Sequence

Use it for actions that advance a spoken or informal narrative.

Elle est entrée, a salué et s'est assise.
She came in, said hello, and sat down.

Experience or result

It also covers the English present perfect when a completed result matters.

J'ai déjà vu ce film.
I have already seen this movie.

How to form Passé composé

Use avoir or être in the present plus the past participle. Être forms agree with the subject; avoir agreement requires a preceding direct object.
