French Subjonctif imparfait

An archaic literary subjunctive whose practical goal is recognizing forms in older literature and formal prose.

When to use Subjonctif imparfait

Older literary sequence

Recognize it after a past trigger where modern French uses present subjunctive.

Il fallait qu'elle vînt plus tôt.
She had to come earlier.

Formal demand

Recognize it in older legal, official, and literary language.

On exigeait qu'il signât.
They demanded that he sign.

How to form Subjonctif imparfait

Take the passé simple tu form, remove final s, and build the -asse, -isse, or -usse family. Third-person singular carries a circumflex.

-a- endings

Regular. Passé simple -a stems produce the -asse family.

Regular. Passé simple -i stems produce the -isse family.
