French subjunctive worksheet

Most subjunctive lessons start with the trigger list — il faut que, bien que, pour que — and stall because students cannot produce the form fast enough to use it. This sheet does the opposite: pure form drilling on the subjonctif présent, so the trigger lesson lands on ready hands.

How to use this worksheet

• Do the forms first, the trigger list second. Reverse that order and the rule never gets applied.
• Set the verb group to irregular verbs for a sheet on the eight that matter: être, avoir, aller, faire, pouvoir, savoir, vouloir, falloir.
• Use singular pronouns first — je/tu/il forms sound identical to the présent for -er verbs, which is where confidence comes from.

Does this cover the irregular subjunctive verbs?

Yes. Being drawn from the 100 most frequent verbs, the sheet regularly includes sois, aie, aille, fasse, puisse, sache and veuille.

Should students learn triggers or forms first?

Forms. A student who can produce “que je fasse” without hesitating can apply any trigger; one who cannot will avoid the construction entirely, whatever the rule says.
