French irregular verbs worksheet

The verbs no rule covers — and the ones students use most. Drill them until recall is automatic.

French irregular verbs are a small set doing an enormous amount of work: être, avoir, aller, faire, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, venir, prendre. There is no pattern to teach, only exposure to build. This sheet defaults to mixed tenses at B1 so students have to retrieve the form rather than copy the one above it.

      How to use this worksheet

      • Mixed tenses are the point here — a single-tense irregular sheet lets students coast on rhythm instead of recall.
      • Drop to A2 if the class is not ready for conditionnel and subjonctif; the same verbs appear, over fewer tenses.
      • Pair it with the grid puzzle when you want a diagnostic: the blanks show exactly which person-tense cells are missing.

      Questions teachers ask

Which irregular verbs does the worksheet use?

It pulls the irregular verbs inside the 100 most frequent French verbs, so students practise être, avoir, aller, faire, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, venir and prendre rather than rare exceptions.

Can I make the worksheet easier?

Yes. Set the CEFR level to A1 or A2 to reduce the tenses on offer, lower the question count, or restrict pronouns to singular forms only.
