French imparfait worksheet
The most regular tense in French. Use that — build fluency before the passé composé contrast.
The imparfait has a single ending set (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient) applied to the nous stem of the présent, with exactly one exception (être → ét-). That regularity makes it the ideal tense for building speed: students should be able to produce these forms without hesitating before you introduce the passé composé contrast.

How to use this worksheet
- Use forty questions here — the point is automaticity, and the pattern is regular enough to sustain a long sheet.
- Watch the nous / vous forms (nous étudiions, vous criiez): the double i is the classic imparfait error.
- Once this is fast, move to a mixed passé composé + imparfait sheet, where the real difficulty lives.

Questions teachers ask
Are irregular verbs included in the imparfait worksheet?
Yes, but the imparfait is regular for every verb except être, so irregular infinitives still follow the same ending pattern once the nous stem is found.
How do I combine imparfait and passé composé on one sheet?
Set the CEFR level to A2 or above and choose “Mixed tenses”. The worksheet then labels each question with its tense and pulls from both.
