Compound tenses (passé composé and friends)
Every compound tense in French follows the same recipe: auxiliary (avoir or être) + past participle. Conjugate the auxiliary in the matching simple tense, then bolt on the past participle.
| Compound tense | Recipe | Example (parler) |
|---|---|---|
| Passé composé | avoir (présent) + p.p. | j'ai parlé |
| Plus-que-parfait | avoir (imparfait) + p.p. | j'avais parlé |
| Futur antérieur | avoir (futur) + p.p. | j'aurai parlé |
| Conditionnel passé | avoir (conditionnel) + p.p. | j'aurais parlé |
| Subjonctif passé | avoir (subjonctif) + p.p. | (que) j'aie parlé |
Regular past participles: -er → -é (parlé), -ir → -i (fini), -re → -u (vendu). Irregular ones have to be memorized (être → été, avoir → eu, faire → fait, prendre → pris, mettre → mis, voir → vu, savoir → su, pouvoir → pu, vouloir → voulu, devoir → dû…).
For the avoir-vs-être rule and past-participle agreement, see the past-participle agreement guide.
