French conjugation activities for your classroom
Three activities you can use on a board, on paper or in pairs. Each includes prompts, model answers and a follow-up question. No app or account needed.
Three ways to work with French verb forms
1. Repair the ending, then explain the pattern
Give each pair the three sentences below. Tell them that each contains a deliberately incorrect verb form; the task is to repair it, not guess whether it is wrong.
Ask students to correct the form and explain the stem or ending they chose. Then have their partner write a new sentence using the same verb with a different subject.
- Nous finons le travail.
- Vous prendez le train.
- Elles allent au marché.
Show model answers and teaching notes
- Nous finissons le travail.
- Vous prenez le train.
- Elles vont au marché.
Finir uses the -iss- stem with nous in the present; prendre gives vous prenez; aller has the irregular form elles vont. These are different patterns, not one universal rule for all verbs.
2. Pass the sentence to a new pronoun
Use the present tense. One student reads the starting sentence; the next changes only the subject and verb, keeping the rest of the sentence.
Work through the prompts without a timer first. Ask students to say the new sentence and write it down, so silent written endings are not lost in an oral-only activity.
- Nous prenons le train. → vous
- Vous prenez le train. → elles
- Nous venons ensemble. → elles
Show model answers and teaching notes
- Vous prenez le train.
- Elles prennent le train.
- Elles viennent ensemble.
Compare vous prenez with elles prennent, and nous venons with elles viennent. Ask which part changed and which stayed the same. Oral recall and written spelling can reveal different difficulties.
3. Change the viewpoint in the past
State the intended meaning before asking for a tense: a repeated past routine in the first prompt, a completed event in the second.
Have students complete both prompts, then discuss how the speaker presents the event. Change the context and ask whether another tense could express a different viewpoint.
- Routine passée : chaque soir, nous ___ (regarder) un film.
- Événement achevé : hier, nous ___ (regarder) un film en entier.
Show model answers and teaching notes
- Chaque soir, nous regardions un film.
- Hier, nous avons regardé un film en entier.
The models use the imparfait for the stated routine and the passé composé for the stated completed event. Words such as hier do not mechanically force one tense; the intended meaning matters.
Turn one activity into your next handout
Choose a tense and verb group your class has already studied. Use the worksheet generator for additional written prompts and a separate answer key, then bring one corrected example back into discussion. Adjust the task for reading, writing, speaking and accessibility needs.
One teacher program. Practice beyond the lesson.
Want students to continue with app practice between lessons? Bonjour Verbs offers typed practice and corrections; it does not replace your assessment of meaning or spoken use. Présent practice and reference are free; other practice tenses and Smart Quiz require Pro. The optional teacher program has two payment routes below.
