French verb practice for tutors

A one-to-one workflow for connecting your lesson to the student's next practice session. Start with a diagnostic, choose one focus and review it together.

From one-to-one lesson to independent practice

1. Diagnose before setting more practice

Ask the learner for these present-tense forms of aller without a chart. Listen to the answer and ask them to write it as well.

If one form is missing, ask how they tried to construct it. Separate uncertainty about the subject, the irregular stem, spelling and pronunciation before choosing the next task.

  1. je + aller (présent)
  2. nous + aller (présent)
  3. elles + aller (présent)
Show model answers and tutor notes
  1. je vais
  2. nous allons
  3. elles vont

Je vais, nous allons and elles vont use different present-tense stems. One correct answer does not establish that the other persons are secure. Keep a short note of what needs another explanation or a later check.

2. Agree on one focused practice task

Choose a pattern already introduced in the lesson. For a learner working on second-group finir, use the prompts below rather than mixing every tense at once.

Ask the learner to explain the difference between the singular and plural stems, then write one sentence of their own. Agree on a manageable amount of practice; do not treat a fixed question count as a universal prescription.

  1. je + finir (présent)
  2. nous + finir (présent)
  3. elles + finir (présent)
Show model answers and tutor notes
  1. je finis
  2. nous finissons
  3. elles finissent

The models are je finis, nous finissons and elles finissent. The -iss- plural stem belongs to this pattern, not to every verb ending in -ir. In Bonjour Verbs Pro, students can select verbs, tenses and pronouns in their own Custom Quiz; the tutor does not assign it through a dashboard.

3. Review meaning as well as the form

At the next session, ask for a familiar form without showing the previous answers, then put it in a sentence. Add the past-tense comparison only if the learner has studied the passé composé.

Compare what is happening now with a completed event in the past. Ask the learner to explain the change, then make another sentence. If they can fill a blank but cannot explain or use it, return to the lesson rather than just adding repetitions.

  1. Maintenant, nous ___ (finir) le travail.
  2. Événement achevé : hier, nous ___ (finir) le travail.
Show model answers and tutor notes
  1. Maintenant, nous finissons le travail.
  2. Hier, nous avons fini le travail.

The models contrast nous finissons with nous avons fini. They are examples of two intended meanings, not proof of general fluency. Review spoken use and comprehension separately, and agree on the next focus together.

Keep the between-lesson plan simple

Write down the target verb pattern, an example to revisit and what the learner should bring back: a corrected sentence, a question or a short explanation. A screenshot or practice log can support discussion, but it is not proof of independent work. Offer a paper option when devices, accounts or accessibility make app practice unsuitable.

One teacher program. Practice beyond the lesson.

For learners who want app practice between sessions, Bonjour Verbs provides typed conjugation practice and corrections on iOS, Android and the web. Présent practice and reference are free; other practice tenses and Smart Quiz require Pro. There is no tutor dashboard or automatic assignment tracking. Choose teacher-paid access or student-managed discounted subscriptions below.

Two ways to join the teacher program

Choose who pays. Either way, your students get discounted Pro access. Tell us about your group and we'll help you set it up.

You pay for the class

We invoice you for a one-time classroom purchase. Once paid, we send you redemption codes to distribute to your students.

Students sign in and redeem a code for 12 months of Pro. No student payment details and no automatic renewal.

Your students subscribe at a discount

We provide discount codes for you to share with your class. Each student uses a code at web checkout and pays for their own discounted subscription.

Students manage their own payments, renewals and cancellation. This is a student-owned subscription, not a prepaid classroom code.
